Ivano-Frankivsk

The flag of the Ukrainian Oblast of Ivano-Frankivsk consists of a black crow with raised wings and a golden crown on a white background. Along the side of the flag is four thin vertical bands, two on the left of red and black, and two on the right of blue and yellow. The red and black bands represent the struggle for freedom while blue and yellow are the colors of the Ukraine. This flag was adopted on July 26th, 2001.

Comments:

  • As I say every time this flag comes up, someone hit the top of the TV screen while the Stars and Stripes was being shown.
  • Never liked that flag.
  • It's such a completely bizarro design, I just have to love it.
  • Home of the barcode?
  • That flag really sucks. At first I thought it was fake. Sadly, it is not...

Isle of Man

The flag of the Isle of Man or flag of Mann (Manx: brattagh Vannin) is a triskelion, composed of three armoured legs with golden spurs, upon a red background. It has been the official flag of Mann since 1 December 1932 and is based on the Manx coat of arms, which dates back to the 13th century.
The three legs are known in Manx as ny tree cassyn ("the three legs"). The triskelion is an ancient symbol, used by the Mycenaeans and the Lycians. It is not known for certain why the symbol was originally adopted on the Isle of Man. Before its adoption in 1932, the official flag of the Isle of Man was the Union Jack.

South Uist (Ytre Hebridene)

The Scottish island of South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides archipelago, traditionally part of Inverness-shire, has been associated with a green flag bearing a dark blue Nordic style cross, fimbriated (outlined) in white, for several years and this was formally registered by the Lord Lyon, Scotland’s heraldic authority, in 2017, an announcement being made on June 28th. The flag was duly added to the Flag Institute registry.

Whilst there is no definitive explanation for the design or its origin, as with the proposed Barra flag, the Scandinavian style cross reflects the territory’s inclusion in the mediaeval Norse “Kingdom of the Isles“. It may have arisen around 2003 as a proposed flag for the ‘Western Isles’ or from earlier internet based proposals. The design subsequently became well established in the ensuing decade and is evidently much used across the island.

Ytre Hebridene (forslag)

In 2018 calls were heard for the possible adoption of a new flag, specifically to represent the island chain and its residents, rather than the local authority. One such proposal features the Nordic cross pattern that is already found in the distinct flags borne by two of the islands, Barra and South Uist but in the familiar colour scheme of the council’s arms and comprises a white cross fimbriated (edged) in a dark blue shade, against a golden yellow background.

A black “Birlinn”, typical of the local heraldry, as detailed, appears in the canton of the cross. This distinct and meaningful local charge, with its strong local heritage, merits retention in any new flag for the chain.

Vinland

2014
The flag for Vinnland, or more precisely "the people's technocratic republic of Vinnland" appears on the back of the three latest albums of the Goth-Rockgroup Type O Negative as well on numerous t-shirts. The flag is supposed to symbolize the republic of Vinnland situated in north America. Vinnland and it's flag are the brain child of the hulking black-haired front man of the band Type O Negative: Peter Steele. Steele incorporated his idea's of paganism, left/right wing political flirtations and his own heritage (his mother was part Icelandic) into a concept of a republic named after the first name the Vikings gave to north America: Vinland. The Vikings landed in Newfoundland around 1000 AD. and built a colony there. Steele takes this idea and tries to imagine what America would be like if the Vikings had actually stayed, and built a civilisation there. Based on that he designed a new flag in a Scandinavian cross pattern and gives it his favorite colours: green, black and white (which coincidently remind me of the German war cross). The concept of the people's technocratic republic only appears once in the song title "The glorious liberation of the people's technocratic republic of Vinnland by the combined forces of the united territories of Europa". In one of his interviews Steele says that he thinks the world would be better off if it were governed by scientists, hence technocratic. for more information see here

It is a historical fact, that vikings really got to what now is called Newfoundland, and probably to Labrador and perhaps even more to the south of the North American coast too. However, they did not call that land "Vinnland" but Vinland. It is thought that the name came from the presence of currants ("vinbÀr" in modern Swedish), not of a supposed presence of vine or grapes.

Finlandsvensk flagg

Barra (Ytre Hebridene)

The flag of the Scottish island of Barra, in the Outer Hebrides archipelago, traditionally part of Inverness-shire, was registered on November 23rd 2017. The island had been flying its green flag, bearing a white Nordic style cross, for over a decade. Details regarding the provenance and significance of this design are sketchy but the island was part of the mediaeval Norse ‘Kingdom of the Isles‘ and the name of the isle itself is of part Norse origin; as with the prospective flag of South Uist, this historico-cultural linkage is reflected in the Scandinavian form of the flag.
